Tonsillitis
is an inflammation of the tonsils, which are small organs made of
lymphatic tissue on either side of the throat's entrance. Bacteria like
Streptococcus
is typically th cause,
but
may also be caused by viral infection. Symptoms include: coughing, sore throat,
swallowing problems, hoarse, pain and swelling of the tonsils. The person with tonsillitis may also have:
headaches, earache, fever and chills, nausea and vomiting, nasal obstruction and discharge, and enlarged
lymph nodes throughout the body.
Tonsillitis is more common in children, but it may occur at any age.
In adults, it may be a sign that the body’s resistance to disease is lower than it should be. Poor
diet and nutrition that is high in refined carbohydrates, low in
protein, and other nutrients may also make one more vulnerable to getting
tonsillitis. Some people get repeats of tonsillitis, and it can become a chronic
condition. In general, the more repeats of tonsillitis a person gets, the more difficult it is to
cure the problem because every time the tonsils become inflamed then scar tissue builds on the tonsils.
