According the USA CDC Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention, the sexually transmitted disease chlamydia accounts
for the most of the sexually transmitted disease epidemic in the
United States. Sexually transmitted chlamydia infection is two times
as common as gonorrhea. Every year over 4 million new cases are
diagnosed and it is estimated over 50,000 women a year become sterile
as a result of the disease. An alarming 18% of American teen
adolescents have had a chlamydial infection, and one recent study
found that 50% of the women on one college campus had been infected.
Symptoms of chiamydia include genital inflammation, vaginal or
urethral discharge, difficulty in urinating, painful intercourse, and
itching in and around the inflamed area. The symptoms may appear in
either women or men. But, as many as 70% of the women and 10% of the
men who have chiamydia may experience no symptoms at all. This is bad,
as untreated chlamydial infection in women leads to sterility in an
estimated over 30% of the cases. Pelvic inflammatory disease and
irreparable damage to the reproductive system can occur, and hysterectomy
may be required. Form men, prostatitis and inflammation of the seminal
vesicles may be caused by chiamydia. Symptoms of prostatitis include:
urination pain, and a watery mucous urethral discharge. Diagnosis of
chlamydia infection is made on the basis of bacteriologic examination
of urine or vaginal or urethral discharge.
