Fibroids also called "uterine myomas" are growths that form on the interior muscular wall or
exterior of the uterus. They are almost never malignant. The problem may also affect the cervix. It is estimated that 20 to
30% of women get fibroids and asian & african american women are at
greater risk. The fibroids usually occur between the ages of 32 to 46 and normally
shrink after menopause. It is believed that the hormone estrogen is involved and the problem
maybe genetically passed in the family. The fibroids may cause heave and frequent
menstrual periods. They can cause infertility,
anemia, bleeding between periods,
fatigue,
and increased vaginal discharge. Fibroids also may be a cause of painful sexual
intercourse or cause bleeding to occur after sexual intercourse. This
may play a role in sexual dysfunction
for women. Other problems that may occur depending on where the
fibroids are located as bowel pain or pressure, bladder problems, and
urethra or kidney blockages. Use of oral contraceptives may increase the
risk of fibroids. 30% of hysterectomies are performed to remove
fibroids and women considering a hysterectomy should give it careful
consideration if it the operation is needed.

In many of the women who have them,
fibroids may produce no symptoms. The first symptom may be either pain
at the beginning of the period or increased menstrual flow.
Fibroids normally do not alter the menstrual cycle, but as they
grow they may cause increased frequency of urination, bladder
displacement, urine retention, and
constipation. They can also
cause infertility or miscarriage, pain during sexual intercourse,
increased vaginal discharge, and, due to the bleeding, anemia. A fibroid
sometimes is forced through the cervix, loses
its blood supply, and dies, indicated by a foul smelling odor. Fluctuations
in levels of estrogen and progesterone, the two main female sex
hormones, influence fibroids. Fibroid growth, like that of all
uterine tissue, is stimulated by estrogen. Estrogen levels can
elevate for a variety of reasons, including excess weight/obesity and the
use of estrogen replacement therapy during menopause. After
menopause, when a woman's body produces as much as 80% less
estrogen, fibroids get smaller. And while all uterine tissue responds
to the hormone estrogen, fibroid tissue is extra sensitive to progesterone.
Small fibroids may not need treatment, however they should be
checked up on a regular basis. Doctors are more likely to treat large
and actively growing fibroids that are causing extensive bleeding;
surgery and drugs which may have such masculine effects as a
deepened voice are the most common issues. Fibroids
are normally not malignant. While herbal treatments used to
control bleeding can work quite quickly, those that control
hormone levels normally take a little longer and may take up to three
months. Formulas help fibroid and related problems by balancing the body's
production of estrogen and progesterone, and relieve combinations
of symptoms in three to six months of use. You may wish to consult
your doctor before using herbal medicine with prescription
medications if they have the required expertise.
