Sciatica is a type of lower back pain indicated by
pain that radiates down the buttock, and often reaches as far down as below the knee, normally on only one side. The pain follows the
path of the sciatic nerve, which is the longest nerve in the human body, which connects the spinal cord with the leg
and foot. Sciatica may be caused by hemiation, nipture, of one of the intervertebral disks. These are pads composed of a firm outer layer surrounding softer material. They sit between individual vertebrae in the spine. When a disk
herniates, the outer layer ruptures and the interior of the disk bulges out of it, which
in turn can irritate nerves at the site of the bulge. Sciatica can also be caused by
arthritis of the vertebral joints; inflammation at the spot where the bones of the pelvis join together, known as
sacroilitis; scarring of the spinal canal in the area through which the nerves pass; and even external pressure on the lower back
or buttock, a condition sometimes called “wallet sciatica”.
Poor bowel movements can make sciatica and its pain worse.
