Jaundice is a yellowing of the skin and eyes that
is caused by a increase of bilirubin in the blood. Bilirubin is a
yellow-brownish substance resulting from the breakdown of old red
blood cells. If this waste product is not removed from the
bloodstream by the liver, then a backup of bilirubin in the blood
occurs, producing a yellowing of the skin and the whites of the
eyes. The urine may be darker than normal, while the stools may
appear lighter. Jaundice is not a disease but an indicator of any one
of several blood or liver disorders. Among the conditions that can
cause jaundice are cirrhosis of the liver, pernicious anemia,
hepatitis, and
hemolysis (abnormal destruction of red blood cells). Jaundice can also
be a sign of a blockage in the path of the bile flow, from the liver
through the bile ducts to the gallbladder and then to the intestinal
tract. If the biliary tract is obstructed, then the bile will pass
back into your blood stream rather than into the digestive system,
which will cause jaundice. Sometimes, jaundice is the result of some
form of parasitic infestation such as
tapeworm or hookworm, or a bite from a flea or mosquito that carries a
viral, bacterial, or parasitic infection. It can also be caused by a
tumor, a gallstone, or other
inflammation.
